All About Lube

One of the biggest causes of painful sex is dryness due to too much friction. So if you haven’t tried lube, what are you waiting for?

There are so many different types of lubricants, so let’s break it down.

Most popular lubricants contain ingredients such as parabens, glycerin, glycol, grapefruit extract, chlorhexidine, and preservatives. This can really mess with your vaginal pH levels and increase risk of developing vaginal infections. Lube should be similar to your vagina’s natural pH and osmolarity.

When looking for labels, look for:

pH: 3.8-4.5 vaginal and 7.0 rectal

Osmolarity: <316 mOsm/kg (osmolarity can only be measured for water-based lube)

Water-Based Lube:

Pros: non-staining, easy to wash off, safe to use with condoms and toys

Cons: absorbs fast so it’s not long lasting, not good for shower/water play

Examples: Slippery StuffGood Clean Love

Silicone-Based Lube:

Pros: thicker so requires less frequent reapplication, great for post-menopausal women, safe with latex condoms

Cons: need soap and water to clean off, cannot be used with silicone toys, staining

Examples: UberlubeSliquid Silk

Oil-Based Lube:

Pros: least likely to irritate the vagina or anus

Cons: cannot be used with condoms, cannot be used with latex toys

Examples: Coconu (use code ELLA for a discount)

Dryness not the issue? Try Ohnut (use code ELLA7 for a discount). Painful sex is NEVER normal. The Ohnut allows for comfortable penetration when sex hurts. Check out our blog “Pain With Sex” to learn more.

  1. A motivating discussion is definitely worth comment. I do believe that you should write more about this topic, it might not be a taboo matter but typically people do not discuss such topics. To the next! All the best!!| Danette Ian Nelson
